Two years ago, Sam Altman called the combination of advertising and AI “uniquely unsettling.” He was right then. He appears to have forgotten why. On February 9, 2026, OpenAI began serving ads inside ChatGPT and in doing so, placed a commercial bet that I believe will prove to be one of the most consequential strategic miscalculations in the short history of the AI industry. The question of ChatGPT ads and user trust is not an abstract debate about privacy principles. It is a practical question about whether the platform’s core value proposition a neutral, unbiased intelligence you can trust with your real questions can survive commercial contamination. My argument is that it cannot, not fully, and that digital marketers who have built strategies around AI tool credibility will feel the consequences long before OpenAI does.
Why Users Came to ChatGPT in the First Place
ChatGPT reached 800 million weekly active users not because it was the cleverest technology on the market, but because it felt fundamentally different from everything else online. Google gave you ten blue links and an agenda it never fully disclosed. Social media gave you content curated by engagement algorithms optimised for time-on-platform, not for your benefit. ChatGPT gave you something that felt and this word matters enormously honest.
People told it things they wouldn’t type into Google. They asked it about their medical anxieties. Their relationship problems. Their financial fears. Their doubts about God. Zoe Hitzig, a researcher who recently left OpenAI, described this with unusual candour: users generated “an archive of human candor that has no precedent, in part because people believed they were talking to something that had no ulterior agenda.” That absence of agenda was ChatGPT’s product. It was the thing being sold to subscribers, to enterprise clients, to a world exhausted by platforms that treat attention as inventory.
The moment you introduce advertising into that environment, you introduce an ulterior agenda. The question of how large that agenda is, and how well-disclosed it remains, is secondary to the simple fact of its existence.
How Ads Change the User Experience Fundamentally, Not Marginally
OpenAI has been careful in its public positioning. Ads appear only at the bottom of responses, clearly labelled. They do not, the company insists, influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Conversations remain private from advertisers. These are genuine commitments, and they deserve to be acknowledged. But they miss the psychological mechanism by which trust erodes.
Trust in an information source is not binary it doesn’t switch off the moment a sponsored placement appears. It degrades. Incrementally, silently, over repeated interactions. The moment a user receives a recommendation from ChatGPT and notices a sponsored ad from a competitor brand below that recommendation, a question forms: did the answer I just received reflect the best available information, or did it reflect what someone wasn’t paid to suppress? That question, once formed, cannot be unasked. Research by the Reuters Institute consistently shows that audiences who notice commercial relationships in trusted media sources extend their scepticism to the editorial content above the ad, regardless of whether any actual influence occurred.
There is already direct evidence that OpenAI’s early execution validated this concern. When promotional messages for Peloton and Target appeared inside ChatGPT conversations completely unrelated to either brand, OpenAI’s Chief Research Officer Mark Chen was forced to post publicly that the company “fell short.” The company pulled the feature within days. It was the fastest possible proof of concept for the argument I’m making: even a single poorly matched commercial intrusion can trigger a user revolt that takes weeks of reputational work to contain.

The Google Parallel A History Worth Studying
We have watched this exact film before. Google’s original PageRank algorithm was a genuine intellectual breakthrough an attempt to surface the most authoritative, relevant content on the web using citation signals rather than human editorial judgment. The early Google was, by the standards of its era, trustworthy in a way that felt almost radical. Larry Page and Sergey Brin had literally written an academic paper arguing that ad-funded search was inherently biased and that a search engine that depended on advertising could not be trusted to serve users’ interests above advertisers’.
Then they built the world’s most profitable advertising machine on exactly that model. And slowly not overnight, but inexorably users learned to distrust the top results. They scrolled past the ads. They developed search literacy that assumed the first page was contaminated. Studies today show that a substantial share of users under 35 now begin searches by appending terms like “Reddit” or “forum” to their queries, specifically to escape the commercial overlay of standard search results. They’ve given up on the premise that the unfiltered Google answer is the best answer. That took two decades. AI could compress the timeline considerably because the expectations were set higher from the start, and because the information being sought is often more sensitive.
What OpenAI Risks Losing
The financial pressure driving this decision is real and should be stated fairly. OpenAI faces an estimated $115 billion cash burn by 2030. It has committed to over $1.4 trillion in AI infrastructure spending. Only 5% of its 800 million users pay for any subscription. The arithmetic of that situation has exactly one logical outcome: monetise the free user base. Advertising is the most proven mechanism for doing that at scale.
But the strategic risk OpenAI is accepting in exchange for that revenue stream is the premium positioning that justified its enterprise pricing, its government partnerships, and the extraordinary level of user disclosure that makes its data and therefore its models exceptional. Enterprise clients who have been routing sensitive business queries through ChatGPT are already conducting compliance reviews in response to the ad rollout. CTOs in regulated industries fintech, healthcare, legal are asking questions about data sovereignty that the ads announcement has made newly urgent. The reputational value of “the AI that doesn’t have an agenda” is not easily quantified on a balance sheet. Its loss will be.
The Damage to AI Tool Credibility for Marketers
For digital marketers specifically, the implications compound in ways that most have not yet fully processed. An enormous portion of the current value proposition around AI-assisted marketing research rests on the assumption that the tool surfacing competitive intelligence, consumer sentiment, or strategic recommendations is doing so without commercial bias. The moment that assumption is credibly in doubt not proven false, just credibly in doubt the output quality of every AI-generated research brief, every AI-drafted market analysis, every AI-synthesised competitive landscape becomes suspect in a way that is genuinely difficult to audit.
Marketers who have built client-facing workflows on ChatGPT’s outputs now have to answer a question they didn’t have to answer six months ago: how do you know this recommendation wasn’t shaped, even marginally, by an advertiser’s presence on the platform? The answer “OpenAI says ads don’t influence answers” is technically accurate but professionally uncomfortable. It is the kind of answer that creates slide footnotes and client disclaimers rather than confidence.
The Counter-Argument And Why It Partially Holds
The case for the other side
The strongest counter-argument is that ad-funded access is meaningfully better than no access. If advertising keeps ChatGPT free for the 95% of users who don’t pay, and if those ads are well-labelled, contextually matched, and structurally separated from the AI’s reasoning, the trust damage may be manageable particularly given that users already accept commercial models in search, social, and email. Pragmatism, not principle, may govern mass user behaviour. And early survey data suggests many users would rather tolerate ads than lose free access entirely.
That argument is not without merit. Privacy fatigue is real. Users tolerate far more commercial contamination in their digital tools than privacy advocates would prefer. And Perplexity’s decision to abandon ads in late February 2026 after finding that users “start doubting everything” doesn’t necessarily translate to ChatGPT’s scale Perplexity’s user base skews toward high-intent researchers who are disproportionately sensitive to that concern.
But the counter-argument assumes that OpenAI’s execution will remain disciplined under compounding revenue pressure. That is a large assumption. The Peloton and Target incident happened within the first weeks of testing. The financial imperative will not decrease over time. History suggests consistently that the initial principles of ad-funded platforms are their most trustworthy version.
What OpenAI Must Do to Protect What It Built
If OpenAI is determined to pursue advertising and the financial reality suggests it is there are specific structural choices that will determine whether the damage is manageable or irreversible. The most critical is permanence of separation: not just a policy statement that ads don’t influence answers, but an independently audited, technically verifiable architecture that makes influence impossible, not merely prohibited. Stated principles are not the same as architectural constraints.
The second is categorical exclusion. Medical queries, legal questions, mental health conversations, and financial advice requests should be categorically ineligible for ad matching not as a temporary measure, but as a permanent, documented commitment. Caroline Giegerich, IAB’s VP of AI, has noted that existing advertising guidelines were not written for conversational AI. The frameworks being built right now will define the industry’s norms for years. OpenAI has the market position to set those norms generously, or narrowly. That choice is still being made.
Third, and most practically: give paying users something worth paying for. The current tier structure ads for free and Go users, ad-free for Plus and above is the right architecture. But the gap between the tiers needs to widen in capability, not just in comfort. If the only reason to pay is to avoid ads, that’s a tax, not a value proposition. Make the paid product genuinely, demonstrably better so the ad-supported tier feels like access, not like a degraded experience.
The Verdict
The ChatGPT ads and user trustproblem is not hypothetical it has already produced one public retreat, one competitor exit from advertising, and a wave of enterprise compliance reviews, all within the first six weeks of the programme’s existence. That is not the rollout of a policy that users are comfortable with. It is the rollout of a policy that users are tolerating, which is a very different thing. OpenAI built its platform on the premise that an AI assistant with no commercial agenda was worth choosing over every alternative. It is now testing whether that premise was the source of the trust, or merely a feature of it.
My reading of the evidence the Peloton backlash, the Perplexity retreat, the Hitzig warning, the enterprise CTO anxiety is that it was the source. Marketers who have invested in AI tool credibility as a professional differentiator should prepare now for a platform landscape where that credibility is no longer a given. The tools that earn it will be the ones that charge for it honestly, not the ones that give it away freely while quietly selling the room.
